1:3000 Scale Model of Kilbirnie Study Area - 2.5m Sea Level Rise Predicted for 2100
Three months into my thesis i was asked to present my work to date to a panel of local and international viewers. A pdf of this presentation can be found above. At the three month stage i had fully defined my research position and design objectives, i had selected a site, Kilbirnie a urban community to the West of Wellington City at risk of as much as 2.5 metres of sea level rise by the end of the century. Such a drastic change in sea level rise would inundate 75% of the community rendering 2500 citizens homeless. My design solution for the area is therefore to create a floating domestic vessal for ocean inhabitation in the face of this sea level rise, providing residents with an economical and highly efficent form of housing to extend seaward of the coastline in this age of climate change. The main objective is that unlike most floating architecture, my floating community will be informed by the littoral environment of which it inhabits rather than trying to tame the environment, i view it as a positive a chance to allow for constanlty changing spatial realtionships and a more fluid community system.

Since this presentation the thesis has developed greatly and i am know heavily focused on resolving the design of a individual floating modular rotomoulded dwelling. More posts to come....
