The Ellis Island Medal of Honor

Seasoned lawyer and business executive Richard Nasti serves as executive vice president of H.J. Kalikow & Company, LLC, a real estate development, construction, and management firm in New York City. In the late 19th century, the United States saw one of the greatest influxes of immigrants to American soil. The federal government acted by opening Ellis Island in 1892 to be the primary checkpoint for European immigrants wishing to enter the country. Through this portal, about 17 million immigrants entered the US.

The National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) established the Ellis Island Medal of Honor to recognize individual immigrants who have impacted their communities through their selfless service. Candidates are evaluated based on five criteria: passion, gravitas, integrity, humanitarian, and ethnic heritage.

Every year, NECO holds an award ceremony on Ellis Island in the New York Harbor to celebrate ethnic pride. Ellis Island and the nearby Statue of Liberty symbolize freedom, diversity, and opportunity. While many Ellis Island Medal awardees have no direct ties with Ellis Island, their ancestors likely shared similar hopes and struggles to live better lives in America.

To date, more than 500 people have received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
