It's need to be clarified: It's able to call Vietnamese New Year or Tet with the name Lunar New Year. But Vietnamese New Year and Chinese New Year are different. Therefore, if you meet a Vietnamese person at Tet, don't say "Happy Chinese New Year" please!
It is believed that on the twenty third day of the twelfth lunar month, just before Tet, the Kitchen God returns to Heaven to report the activities of every household over the past year to Ngoc Hoang, the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor, emperor of the heavens, either rewards or punishes a family based on ông Táo's yearly report.
Táo - The Kitchen God protects you from bad luck
Longevity God is believed to control the life spans of mortals. According to legend, he was carried in his mother's womb for ten years before being born, and was already an old man when delivered. He is recognized by his high, domed forehead and the peach which he carries as a symbol of immortality. The longevity god is usually shown smiling and friendly, and he may sometimes be carrying a gourd filled with the elixir of life.
Thọ - The Longevity God gives you good heath and longevity
Particularly for the Vietnamese, Land Guardian is believed as a kind, gentle, cheerful and "chubby" god. "Ong Dia" wears simply, sometimes naked, holds a leaf fan, and always laugh. This God is easy-going so he doesn't want to be picky, just bananas are enough.
"Ong Dia" of the Vietnamese often appears with the lion dance, regarded as an ability to balance the bestiality of animal, tame it into an auspicious one.
Địa - The Land Guardian watches out your back
He is one of many Vietnamese gods who bestow happiness. Some say he was a historical personage, probably a 6th-century mandarin called Yang Cheng.
Phúc - The Prosperity God represents for happy families
Wealth God is considered very auspicious.
The legend tells a story of a government official. He lived in a village where for some unknown reason all the inhabitants were extremely short.
The emperor discovered this village and was truly fascinated. He found great pleasure by surrounding himself with people who were shorter than himself. It boosted his ego and made him feel even more powerful. Yes, we know; the emperor had some serious inferiority issues to say the least.
Lộc - The Wealth God brings you money and wealth
It was said that the Jade Emperor was originally the crown prince of the kingdom of Pure Felicity and Majestic Heavenly Lights and Ornaments. At birth, he emitted a wondrous light that filled the entire kingdom. When he was young, he was kind, intelligent and wise. He devoted his entire childhood to helping the needy (the poor and suffering, the deserted and single, the hungry and disabled). Furthermore, he showed respect and benevolence to both men and creatures.
Ngọc Hoàng - The Jade Emperor creates your fate
