The Interconnector

Following on from the previous design project the concept of negative space was explored further, focussing especially on how it could be used to understand or inform aspects of architectural design. Using Steven Holl's interpretation of the Japanese concept of 'ma', as "a temporal interval between two phenomena, not in the sense of a three dimensional entity, but rather as the simultaneous awareness of the experienced phenomena" , a digital system was created using grasshopper as a means of reading overlapping spatial relationships of different aspects of negative space in a selected area of the left bank site.

This negative reading has then been analysed and re-appropriated before being used as a generator in the design process of this cross-programmed art gallery/butchery, informing not only the architectural form of the building but also the governing how spatial relationships are formed between different spaces and the two distinct programmes.
