We are not separate from animals; we are human-animals. Although other animals belong to the same Kingdom, we tend to focus on the differences between humans and animals, ultimately ignoring the vast amount of similarities. Humans and animals share many mental and physical characteristics, yet we still consider ourselves superior whilst relying on animals for survival. Most animals and humans have emotions, eating preferences, representational symbols, the ability to communicate, ability to adapt, sexual behaviors, varieties of facial expressions and advanced hearing.
Our bodies and minds can do extraordinary things, things that we neglect. My photographs represent the structural similarities between animals and humans, ultimately the least complex attribute we share. The physical characteristics are only a small part of what makes each being unique; however, they receive the most attention and judgment. Does one look weak, strong, intelligent, healthy, or trustworthy? One’s structure gives great insight to abstract traits. The body speaks and can be read. Although we sometimes appear very different than animals, we are very much the same. Therefore, humans are not exclusive, we are all animals.
