The main theme of my Major Project in Graphic Design was the use of fear as a control mechanism. The aim of the project was to encourage people to start questioning information given to them by the mass media, instead of blindly believing in everything they hear or see in the news. The undertaken research and its results reassured me that in order to make a fully informed decision it is beneficial to know as much as possible about particular issue however, it becomes difficult when information is presented subjectively as well as partially by the mass media.

I’ve decided to design a book about immigration which would include the history of the immigration to United Kingdom since 1930s as well as its effects on various spheres of life such as culture, education or crime. I’ve tried to be as objective as possible, hence the lack of colours within the main part of the book, as well as both positive and negative aspects of immigration presented. The gate folds are a metaphor of hidden or untold information. The reader needs to find and open them - make an action - in order to fully understand the issue and be able to make an informed decision. The chosen articles relate to the general social concerns, the data within the gate folds is based on the legal documents from the UK Border Agency or Department for Work
and Pensions.
