Daniel Prechtel's profile

Strong Starts - A Look at Ohio State Football Openers

As the president of OneSource Venture Capital in Atlanta, Georgia, Daniel (Dan) Prechtel pairs investors with entrepreneurs. An avid college sports fan, Daniel Prechtel is a lifelong follower of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team.

With a .739 percentage in regular season play, it is not surprising the Ohio State Buckeyes have won nearly all of their home openers, compiling a 112-12-4 record. This tradition began in 1890, when Ohio State - not called the Buckeyes until 1950 - defeated Ohio Wesleyan 20-14.

Though the team did not win a season-starter for the next four years, in 1895 they went on an inaugural game winning streak that lasted until 1943.

As the team became more popular, prompting a move to larger venues, opening day losses became a rarity. Beginning in 1951, longtime head coach Woody Hayes’ squads only had four such losses while taking five national championships in 28 years. The infrequency of these occurrences continued under coaches Earl Bruce and John Cooper, with the last opening-day defeat in 1999.

The pattern is well-established. The last team to attempt a first-game defeat of the Buckeyes, Florida Atlantic on August 31, 2019, outscored them in the fourth quarter but still lost, 45-21.
