The Eliminate Project Is Winning the Battle against MNT
Robert Carlin Burlison joined the Kiwanis Club International (KCI) in Southern California in 1981, first in Glendale and later in La Canada. As a member of the La Canada chapter, Robert C. Burlison organized the Kiwanis Unity Ride to Eliminate (KURE) in 2013. KURE was Robert Burlison’s way of supporting KCI’s The Eliminate Project.

A partnership initiative between KCI and UNICEF, The Eliminate Project began in 2011. Since then, the project has successfully cut the number of neonatal deaths caused by tetanus by almost half. Based on the latest available data, 30,848 infants died of tetanus in 2017. This number represents a decrease of 47 percent from 2011.

Despite the significant decrease, Kiwanis Children’s Fund’s chief operating officer Ann Updegraff Spleth said that the number is still too high and the target of The Eliminate Project is zero deaths. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) remains a public health threat in 12 countries. In these countries, women and their babies have little to no access to maternal services and child care services.
