Train Routes and Timetable app

Why a Train App?

During Costa Rican rush hours, streets get heavily congested with private cars and using the public bus is even slower. Journeys that usually take 15 minutes to complete can take up to 2 hours in such moments. When talking with people, nobody seems to even consider using the train, thinking it would be impossible to get where you need due to the limited routes.

I thought the same way, until I looked up all the routes and timetables, which were very hard to find and put together. There was not even a map of the routes available on the official Costa Rican Train Institute 'Incofer'.

To make things even worse, the table was one static image and has the 'pinch to zoom' option disabled for mobile devices, making it completely unreadable (facepalm). The android-only app 'Incofer móvil' is heavily flawed, too, having a unsatisfactory usability and a google maps based map to understand single routes. The app has not been updated in over 2 years.

Despite that, the train has still a very reliable schedule compared to buses, and that the actual routes connected the great metropolitan area in a very useful way. But due to the lack of information, people only used familiar routes, and in times they could remember the train completing their routes.

The official schedule is heavily demand based, leaving big gaps in the operating hours.

I turned this into a personal project, seeking to make better visual information available to the citizens of Costa Rica and hoping to create consciousness about using public transportation over cars.

Creating a map

Based on the the stops from the official time tables and arrange with a bit of guidance from Google maps, I created a map that visualizes the 3 railways: Alajuela (red), Heredia (yellow) and Cartago (blue). All routes routes head downtown, but don't have overlaps to offer reliable transfers from one to another.

To visualize the map and the large timetables for everyone, the small size is a limitation that requires an intuitive way to display all the hours. That's why I chose to add them in a horizontally scrollable table.
