Back to the Root / Zoroastrian Philosophy of Happiness

The aim of this project is to use graphic imagery, design and art skills to explore how Zoroastrian beliefs might enrich our modern existence. It will reveal how questions about happiness and the meaning of life were already answered over three thousand years ago and will try to apply these answers to the life we lead today.
The brief for this project required promotion and advertising for a public exhibition. I wanted to use my skills as a designer to express visually the essence of Zoroastrianism. I used quotes, thoughts and symbols which are meant to help resolve mental pressure and anxiety. This interpretation of Zoroastrianism attempts to give back hope and encourage people to lead a moral life in order to maintain a clean soul and healthy body. The purpose of my exhibition is to remind them how this system of values helped older generations to live happily and how it could work for them as well.
Each of the angels represents an element of existence. Their design is therefore meant to present their elementary function through modern art. For instance, the colours that are incorporated into each image have a distinct meaning and connect with their function on this earth. Across the whole project, the colours used range from white to red and orange. White stands for purity. Purity of body and mind is central to Zoroastrian concepts of a good life. Fire is the philosophy’s most sacred symbol. It represents change and the process of purification.
Booklet Design-
The design imageries are structured around the seven attributes – so-called angels – of Zoroastrianism. They are presented together with philosophical quotes to help us live happier and better. Many design elements used in the images were inspired by Persian statues, motifs and art crafts of the Zoroastrian era. These elements have been presented with modern design elements such as Cubism.
