In mid-November, the Houston Food Bank lost 1.8 million pounds (62 tractor trailer loads) of fresh produce, dairy, and bulk grain after its refrigeration system broke down and rendered the bank’s coolers and freezers inoperable.

After the Houston community heard about the devastating loss, calls and messages of support flooded the Houston Food Bank. Donations of money and food poured in, along with many new volunteers ready to help out.

Houston Food Bank president and CEO Brian Green said the situation was overwhelming, since it is a different situation when the bank faces an emergency of its own and its ability to serve the community is adversely affected. But how the community responded was not new to the Houston Food Bank, since the community is known for coming together whenever Houston faces a struggle. Green expressed his thanks and appreciation for the love and support the Houston community showed to the nonprofit.

At present, the Houston Food Bank is back to its normal operations, distributing over 10 trailer loads of food to its partners every day.
