Illustration - Loki's Children

Loki's Children
I love Norse Mythology so I decided to do illustrations for a book telling the stories of the gods and creatures in the Mythos. I decided to focus on Loki's children because I've done one of his children before. I wanted these to be strong, emposing, and historic: like the creatures themselves. These drawings took 13.5 hours.
Sleipnir - Steed of Odin
Sleipnir is an 8-legged horse that Loki was the MOTHER of. During the Fortification of Asgard a giant offered to build a high wall around Asgard to protect the Gods in three seasons, in exchange for marriage to Freya, the sun, and the moon. The Gods did not enjoy this deal, but Loki had an idea. The giant would have to build the wall in a single winter with no aid but his horse. The Gods liked this plan and the giant accepted the deal. When there were but three days left of winter, the giant was almost finished building the wall. The angry Gods ran to Loki and threatened to kill him. Loki had another plan. While the giant's horse was traveling through the woods, Loki transformed into a mare with stars in her mane. The giant's horse was mesmerized and broke his reigns to chase after the mare. The giant could not complete his task without his horse, and the Gods killed him and finished the wall themselves. Loki was missing for a year before he returned with a foal- Sleipnir. He gave his 8-legged child to Odin.
Jormungand - The World Serpent
Jormungand has been around forever, encircling the Earth keeping the oceans in and swollowing his tail.  Thor once went fishing with the giant Hymir. When Hymir refused to provide Thor with bait, Thor took the head off Hymir's largest ox to use as his bait. They rowed to a point where Hymir often fished and Thor drew up two whales. Thor demanded to go further out to sea and did so despite Hymir's protest. Jormungand took the ox head and Thor faced the World Serpent. The giant Hymir severed thors fishing line out of fear that killing the serpent would bring about Ragnarok. It is fated that when the serpent releases his tail and Ragnaro arrives, Thor and Jormungand will slay eachother.
Fenrir - Bringer of Ragnarok
In the Binding of Fenrir it is said the Gods raised Fenrir to try to control him. When he grew at an astonishing pace, the Gods decided to chain him up. He was tricked three times by the Gods who were trying to fetter him so he could not fulfill his destiny of wreaking havoc and bringing about Ragnarok. After two failed attempts the Gods had the dwarves forge the strongest fetter ever that gave the apperence of being soft and lightweight. The third time the Gods tried to fetter him, Fenrir became suspicious and he made the Gods promise that if he couldn't break the magical fetters that he could bite off a God's hand. Tyr made the promise with the beast, and therefore lost his hand when Fenrir could not break his binds. The fetter was then tied to a boulder and Odin jammed a sword in Fenrir's mouth and the left him on an island-- until he breaks his binds and brings about the end.
Here are the only materials I used and my initial Thumbnails.
