For many years, drawing is widely practiced in both formal and informal therapeutic contexts. Psychologist Carl Jung has described drawing, particularly mandalas, as an effective activity to calm many patients who have failing psychological health. While more studies are still being conducted to find important information that would further quantify the effectiveness of using drawing as therapy, there are previous studies that concluded that drawing is an effective stress reliever.

A research performed by Steven Robbins and Chloe Bell has randomly assigned 50 adults, with ages below 30, to participate in two different undertakings. One group was assigned to create artwork, while the other group was asked to sort some art prints.

Before engaging in their assigned tasks, both groups were forced into mild negative mood and anxiety when they were asked to list their most pressing concerns and worries. Then, the first group was provided with paper, color pencils, and oil pastels and was asked to draw for 20 minutes. The second group was given a stack of 60 art prints to sort for 20 minutes.

After three repetitive sessions, the artwork group showed a significant reduction in negative mood and anxiety compared to the sort group. The study showed that drawing and creating artwork can significantly relieve stress.
