This whole entire project was a response to a brief about preserving a dying culture. As I myself a Peranakan Chinese Indonesian, i looked at my own culture and tried to understand my own culture. Digging up my own identity, surprisingly made myself appreciated kebaya more, it maybe just a form of fashion but it actually held an important role as a peranakan chinese as a form of identity. By using it we could defined that they were not the Chinese whose came and tried to make a living. The colors defined the age of the wearer, single or married with a meaning behind its each pattern embroidered on the fabric. This sheer fabric based clothing embraced feminity with amazing intricacy, creativity, story and beauty. However, practicality and emantipation had demanded women to change thus, it is inevitable for this tradition to keep fading which made it worth preserving.
