For my 30th birthday this year, we travelled from New Zealand to Orlando for a fun, colourful, theme park holiday, with a brief visit to New York at the end of the trip. I took my Nikon D7000 with me and turned the wait times for park rides into opportunities for some photography.
On our return, I assembled the photos and worked on turning them into a commemorative coffee table book, working with the team at Queensberry to make it a reality. The front cover design is my attempt to solve an interesting design challenge: how to combine Walt Disney World and New York without creating a messy fusion of logos or stereotypical fonts?
My research led me to the 1985 logo for The Rockefeller Centre, designed by Tom Geismar for Chermayeff & Geismar. I loved its minimalist elegance and sharp linework, to which I added Mickey Mouse's iconic ears silhouette in order to bridge the city that never sleeps with the largest theme parks in the world. The cover material is vintage blue leather with copper foil lettering.
