An augmented reality installation, setup by 5 of us from two different schools, in 2 different countries.

We as students of Kunsthochschule Medien, Köln were invited to exhibit at the Chitrakatha 2019 design festival in India. Two of us from KHM exhibiting group of students decided to work together on an augmented reality project, which would integrate the space in India at the Chitrakatha Design festival. This design festival is a festival organised by the campus of National Institute of Design, Vijayawada, India.

We communicated with an ex-student and a current student of this campus and decided to create our AR project with a special space in the campus, which is an open space ground, with life size drawings painted on it. We shared photographs of the space and this became our initial base for creating the animations in augmented reality over them. On our arrival at the actual space in Chitrakatha, we re-assembled the animations with the live space.

The idea was to integrate into a living space. We gave a demonstration at the opening of the AR exhibition to the students attending this festival, where we showcased our works and showed a bit of the process and how AR works.

Conceptually it was a surreal experience to be able to create another layer of art to the existing art 7000 kms away from you. The space of our AR project is actually used by the students of the campus to gather, do things together, organise events etc. The AR works remain there forever and are accessible to anyone with a phone/ipad.

   

People got to try out the augmented reality and experience the animations on their personal devices.
