Visual Linguistics

This project required us to design a visual questionnaire to determine preferred impersonalisation strategies. This questionnaire will be sent out to different people in different countries using google forms to gain various answers aiding in the qualitative research project. The main research question at hand is; "How can a visual narrative be developed to replace a text-based narrative with (specific + necessary criteria) in a questionnaire to instigate impersonalised responses?" This will be achieved by creating a wordless narrative by means of story telling to achieve a certain linguistic criteria as communication goal.

During this project I made use of "action research" - The cycle works as follows; I started with my planning, this entails doing research about linguistic communication strategies, and various ways people communicate without the use of words or text. The next step in the cycle is taking action, here I created various scamps and possible solutions for my problem, after consultations with my project leaders I created two final solutions called Pilot 1 and pilot 2. These solutions were then tested on various people to gain insight on whether my solutions were plausible. This leads to the third step in the research cycle, called reflection. Here I had a look at the answers I gained from the pilot trials and planned how I could improve my solutions to work better. This leaded to more planning, which leaded to more action and further pilot tests, until I found my final solutions.

In my project I had the following two contexts that I had to communicate via a visual narrative and storytelling; "Uni-Ext" (Universal + External + Partly known) e.g. "In Griekeland bestuur hulle nogals rof" and "Sav" (Existential + External + Vague + Plural + Verb) eg. "Hulle se die his wemel van spoke". My final answers were (Uni-Ext) "In Japan eet mense baie rys" and (Sav) "Hulle se dat mars vol aliens is".

My concept was to create a visual narrative inspired by a comic book style layout where my story is explained in three main frames, ending off with a fourth frame that is different from the rest which indicated the main action and where the reader must answer the sentence My art style is simplistic with the idea to make something that is easy and quick to understand, as questionnaires have to be answered quickly. The color use is mainly monochromatic with accents of red aiding the idea of a simple style. This also causes the the story to not depending on color to be interpreted, allowing color blind people to be able to fully interpret the sentence, further aiding in the research.
