THE SOUND OF SILENCE
It is often our instinct to add lots of detail into our work, and allowing works the space to breathe can be quite a brave move. When this is done well, the work can be much more powerful through this omission.
Using any material you choose, experiment with different ways that you can present information using ideas we have covered in today’s session.
Think specifically about how information is altered or strengthened by omitting, redacting, or deleting certain aspects. (I.E. the Penguin book cover for 1984 by George Orwell or the Erased DeKooning Drawing by Robert Rauschenberg)
What is added when you remove some elements? How can you convey something by removing it? What effect does it have on your work when you remove all extraneous material?
Is it possible to retain your intended meaning by removing elements, or does this force the work to become something entirely new?
