CoFounder Magazine | 10 Issues of Fonts in Use

Between 2015-2018 I had the privilege of designing issues 3 to 12 of a business magazine called CoFounder. Aimed at the burgeoning startup scene, the magazine was distributed at events like Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and Slush in Helsinki.

The mag relied on a range of great typefaces from Grilli, Klim, OH no Type Co + others. As well as a few display faces drawn by myself. For exampleTusker Grotesk (now the brand font of the England RFU) was originally made for the magazine. Similarly, before they were made available, display fonts of mine such as Borough Grotesk, Hebden, Cindie, Bobik were first tested in CoFounder's pages. Not to mention other un-named fonts which have never seen the light of day. Each issue of CoFounder was a playground to learn the application and practical design of type.

Below are a selection of CoFounder spreads and the typefaces that appeared in them:

⇑ ISSUE 04 / pp.28-29
GT Sectra & GT Pressura. Early issues relied mainly on Grilli Type fonts. The body text of the magazine throughout was the very nice text face GT Sectra.

⇑ ISSUE 04 / pp.32-33
GT Sectra, GT Pressura & Hebden. The headlines on this article were set in an early version of Hebden before it was available on MyFonts in 2016.

⇑ ISSUE 04 / pp.12-13
GT Sectra & GT Pressura ... it was a lot of fun using Grilli Type fonts!

⇑ ISSUE 05 / pp.38-39
GT Sectra, GT Pressura & the first outing of Cindie Mono in the headlines of this article.

⇑ ISSUE 06 / pp.30-31
GT Sectra, GT Pressura, Bobik and an un-named display face made for the article but based almost-entirely on this Victorian era epitaph type.

⇑ ISSUE 06 / pp.32-33
As above – GT Sectra, GT Pressura & Bobik.

⇑ ISSUE 06 / pp.34-35
As above – GT Sectra, GT Pressura, Bobik and an un-named display face.

⇑ ISSUE 06 / pp.66-67
GT Sectra, GT Pressura and an un-named display face based on a slightly unsophisticated Soviet-era Bodoni-esque condensed type I'd seen on some book covers in Estonia.

⇑ ISSUE 06 / pp.70-71
GT Sectra, GT Pressura and free condensed sans called Steelfish. For obvious reasons condensed display types are very useful in columned layouts. So after using Steelfish in Issue 06 I started drawing my own condensed sans.

⇑ ISSUE 09 / pp.06-07
GT Sectra, GT Pressura, Hebden (up in the header) along with Modesto Open (Parkinson Type Design) and a first iteration of a then more curvy Tusker Grotesk.

⇑ ISSUE 09 / pp.62-63
GT Sectra, GT Pressura, Hebden, Monstre (Lev Berry) and Founders Grotesk X-Condensed (Klim Type).

⇑ ISSUE 09 / pp.62-63
As above – GT Sectra, GT Pressura, Hebden, Monstre (Lev Berry) & Founders Grotesk X-Condensed (Klim Type).

⇑ ISSUE 10 / pp.08-09
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk, Tugev (an unreleased sans for basic footers and headers drawn especially for the magazine) & single delicious instance of Viktor Script (OH no Type Co.)

⇑ ISSUE 10 / pp.18-19
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk & Tugev.

⇑ ISSUE 10 / pp.42-43
GT Sectra, GT Pressura & GT Walsheim. Another fine showing by Grilli Type in a special section on health.

⇑ ISSUE 11 / pp.16-17
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk & Tugev. By this point using the final iteration of Tusker all-through the magazine was standard.

⇑ ISSUE 11 / pp.28-29
As above – GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk & Tugev.

⇑ ISSUE 11 / pp.32-33
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk, Tugev & headlines in Industry (Fort Foundry).

⇑ ISSUE 11 / pp.52-53
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk & Tugev.

⇑ ISSUE 12 / pp.08-09
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk, Tugev & modest instance of Borough Grotesk Pro just after it was made available for free.

⇑ ISSUE 12 / pp.44-45
GT Sectra, Tusker Grotesk, Tugev & some headlines in Industry (Fort Foundry).

⇑ ISSUE 12 / pp.62-63
Tusker Grotesk & Tugev. In the back of each issue of CoFounder would be a directory of new startup businesses.

⇑ ISSUE 12 / pp.06-07
Borough Grotesk, Tusker Grotesk, Tugev & Industry (Fort Foundry).

It was a lot of fun designing CoFounder, and it was a great opportunity to try out self-drawn fonts. I'm grateful to the publishers for being given the freedom to use my own typefaces issue to issue and so learn how to draw curves for a real-world application.

CHEERS! & Thanks for the Appreciation.
