Anthropology Individual Project: Effects of Binge-Watching
Project Scope: Conducting Research in Singapore for the Institute of South East Asian Studies (ISEAS) regarding either Health, Employment, Culture or Family
Part 1: Exploring topics
Below are some of the ideas I meddled with, due to the range of possible directions I could go in with all the different topics.
- The degree to which students nowadays are in tune with world news
- The culture of binge watching and how it has an impact on our life
- To what degree do students/adults pay attention to their mental health
- The relation of the music teenagers listen to and their character/behavior
- Social media having an impact ( positive/negative ) on relationships
- The degree that having pets has an impact on your emotional health ( students/adults)

Part 2: Deciding on Topic, refining question, reasons & method
Decided Topic: Health
Refined Research Question: Does Binge-Watching have an impact on us Physically, Cognitively, and Emotionally?
Reasons: Personal experience and friends/family feeling that binge-watching has led to their dissatisfaction and feeling 'empty' after doing completing a series that way.
Target Audience: 18-30 years old, Millennials ( most in-tune with modern technology)
Research Methodology: Survey (more responses to analyse, wider range as well)
Time Span: Over a week's time
Target No. Of Participants: 30 (Actual Number: 41)
Part 3: coming up with the survey questions
(Some examples)
II) Some Examples of Questions for Binge-Watchers
I) Some Examples of Questions for Non Binge-Watchers
PART 4: DATA ANALYSIS
Some Interesting Data
I) Insights
- Binge-watching has more of a positive emotional impact than it does, negative, on people due to them being able to escape from their problems in the meantime and then see it from a clearer perspective afterwards.
- Majority (as they think of it now) are more likely to remember shows they binge-watched rather than over a period of time
- Binge-watching creates more of an emotional attachment to the characters because they are exposed to the full character development within a short amount of time
II) Trends
- Binge-watching affects them mostly in the way that they feel like their eyes are strained and have difficulties processing information when trying to perform tasks.
- Majority of binge-watchers binge-watch due to the fact that they have the urge/need to find out what happens next
- Majority feel like binge-watching acts as a positive escape in the meantime from their emotions, feel more calm afterwards
- Majority feel like binge-watching doesn't lead to more binge-eating for them
PART 5: FINAL RESEARCH POSTER
