Research
This project was a development of design process and an exploration in form. The Salt and Pepper Grinders were inspired by the design attributes and qualities of Philippe Starck, and his language as a designer. My research revealed that Starck has an eccentric eye for design, creating products which are unique but beautiful, and at the same time functional. He frequents metallic finishes in his products and organic shapes which create unusual forms for every day objects. Wood is used elegantly in Starcks design and mated with metal and other materials harmoniously. Variation in his work spans a wide range, from the odd to humorous and ecological to advanced mechanics.
Project Goals
- Learn the components of a basic design methodology
- Understand research techniques and use them to develop the intended emotional and linquistic goals of a design problem
- Through a design proces develop beautiful and appropriate forms and sketch those in two and 3D
- Translate those sketches into a fully functioning set of grinders
