Leitura

CONCEPT
Leitura is a chair that merges the functionality of both a reclining and a rocking chair, thus presenting a simpler and modern aesthetic piece, while providing a relaxed posture for book reading.
PROJECT
Built with a white colored plywood structure and a mild gray Burel cloth chair, it conveys an atmosphere of modernity and neutrality, besides transmiting an idea of confort for its rocking chair form and cloth texture.
The chair was designed through drawing and modeling at 1:1 scale.

It was awarded 1st Place in the 2016 edition of the portuguese Guilherme Awards contest, in the Higher Education category.
TARGET
The chair was designed for an age group between 20 and 60 years, capable of sitting and laying down and stand back up on their own, and its body posture during use looks to encourage reading for both enthusiast and casual readers, also providing a good resting position if wanted.

SYMBOLIC VALUES
Modernity, neutrality, objectivity, fluidity and comfort are the symbolic values inherent in the design of Leitura, which pitch it against a contemporary problem - that of the decline in reading habits. Leitura is like a vehicle, a mode of transportation, for the reading world. This is why it is colored in bright and neutral shades of gray, and modelled with fluid curves: like an high speed vehicle sweeping and swiftly flying through structures of mystical plants and caves.
ENQUIRY
A group of people aged from 30 to 50 years were confronted with the chair in a inquiry, as an exercise for the subject of Semantics. Three of the projected values - Objectivity, Confort and Modernity - were common aspects referred by the respondents.
Reggards to how safe the chair was to use weren't coherent, and the ideas of childishness, coldness and elegance were also mentioned.
