Exhibition Brochure

I have a habit to get a brochure or leaflet of exhibitions.

But I could not find a brochure or leaflet in 'Jean-Michel Basquiat Exhibition',

held in spring of 2013. I was curious if brochure of 'Jean-Michel Basquiat Exhibition' would be served.

So I designed a brochure inspired by impression of his artwork and life.

저는 전시를 보면 브로셔나 리플렛을 꼭 챙겨오는 습관이 있습니다.

작년 봄에 국제갤러리에서 열렸던 ‘장-미셸 바스키아 전’을 보러갔었는데,

브로셔나 리플렛이 갖춰져 있지 않은 점이 아쉬웠습니다.

이에 ‘장-미셸 바스키아 전’의 브로셔가 만들어진다면 어떤 형태가 나올 수 있을까,

하는 간단한 호기심에서 진행한 작업입니다.

If Judged with a conservative view of 1970-80's, Basquiat was a rebel.

His process of inspiration and working was also very free.

He seemed to be shouting, "Break the rules".

He filled the canvas with signs and symbols only he can recognizable.

So I defined his identity as 'Breaking Frames' and 'Unkindness',

and used them for the concept of the brochure.

1970 – 80년대 보수적인 뉴욕 미술계의 시각에서 본다면, 바스키아는 이단아와 같은 사람이었고,

또 영감을 얻거나 작업하는 과정도 매우 자유로워 보였습니다.

마치 “규칙따윈 엿이나 먹어라”라고 외치는 것 같았습니다. 자신만이 알아볼 수 있는 기호와

상징들로 캔버스를 가득 채워놓았으니까요. 그래서 ‘틀에 갇히지 않았다는 것’과 ‘불친절함’,

이 두 가지 키워드를 그의 아이덴티티로 정의하고, 이를 책자의 컨셉으로 사용하였습니다.

I set forth a design from setting size of each pages are different.
And bound them diagonally using a sewing machine. It was really unkind.
You can read the contents, but it requires a little patience. If you look at each page,
there is a section of a line and X-box instead of text and image.
I desired to create rhythmical sequence using these components.

각 페이지의 크기를 전부 다르게 하고, 재봉틀을 사용해 펼침면을 사선으로 바느질하여 제본하였습니다.

매우 불친절한 제본이었죠. 내용을 읽을 수는 있지만 약간의 인내가 필요합니다.

또, 각 페이지를 들여다보면, 도판이 들어가야 할 곳에 엑스 박스를 얹기도 하고,

텍스트가 들어갈 곳에 선만 배치하기도 하였습니다.

이런 엑스 박스나 선과 같은 요소가 그래픽적으로 재밌게 느껴지기도 했습니다.

이런 요소들을 사용해 시퀀스에 나름대로 리듬을 주고 싶었습니다.
