VOLUBI 2 LAMP //

Brief
The goal of the four-week long university project was to improve a selected previous project of ours. I chose Volubi which is an indoor lamp based on rotating modules each lit by LED strips. Designing and building Volubi was an instructive task, and as soon as I finished it a lot more ideas came to my mind that could improve its effectiveness. I also had to build a prototype that can demonstrate the functionality of the final design. My idea was to combine two main types of interior lighting – ambient and task – in a modular lighting system, so it can be used in a wide variety of places and situations.

Process
I redesigned the concept from scratch. Volubi had a relatively large diameter compared to its brightness, so I narrowed down most of the sizes and proportions. I also decided to go with a vertical construction instead of a horizontal one – this way the lamp is much easier to install and use. I tried to avoid detailed, hardcore contours, because my main objective was giving shape to light itself in an unpretentious, delicate way. I used tilted planes while designing the top element in order to give it a special character.

Concept
Volubi 2 is an interior lamp which enables the simultaneous usage of diffused lights and working lights.

The top part is a rotatable element holding a LED spot and a mirror so it can be used the same way as a table lamp. By rotating this part you can also achieve numerous hybrid light effects. The middle part has a LED strip and a lampshade inside, making it a sleek ambient light source. Due to the precise design, the users can accurately control the direction and brightness of the illumination.

Prototype

Prototype 2
I also designed a more refined, precise version with black powder coated surfaces to be featured on the Stockholm Furniture Light&Fair exhibition in early 2020. This way the body of lamp focuses on the pure light itself. I also added a subtle interface that works as a switch with hidden capacitive modules inside.

The concept was also exhibitied on the Design Without Borders Exhibition in Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava. It was also selected among the finalists of the 6th ArtHungry Awards.
