MATERA - CITY VISUAL IDENTITY PROPOSAL

Matera is a small provincial capital in Basilicata inhabithed by over 60.000 people, also known with the name of Città dei Sassi or with the name of Città Sotterranea. The city is famous for its ancient district called Sassi made of houses carved into the rock of the gravina and for its underground hypogeums and cisterns. In 1993 Matera was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 2014 was chosen together with the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv as Capital of Culture 2019.

Matera is still not very known as a touristic and cultural city, so this situation was the starting point to develop its new visual identity. At the question what makes Matera special and worthy of attention the natural answer is that Matera is a city full of tradition and history and that’s what the proposed visual identity wants to show.

Matera is the perfect place for tourists and people that are interested in knowing the story of the city, that are willing to dig in it and discover its history from the Paleolithic Age to the present day.
