Esri ArcGIS Online Demo Project for Cadasta Foundation

VISION

A "fit-for-purpose" solution

Cadasta Foundation, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., was founded to empower people to claim their land rights by providing a free cloud-based platform that communities can use to collect, store, and manage land ownership data. Since its founding in 2015, Cadasta has been focused on implementing a "fit-for-purpose" suite of tools and services to assist partners in formalizing land and resource rights.

CHALLENGE

Moving from an in-house platform to Esri ArcGIS

Esri builds mapping and spatial analytics software. Cadasta Foundation was moving from an in-house-built solution to partnering with Esri. I developed Project Rose as a proof-of-concept to evaluate ArcGIS's capabilities to meet our partner's needs.

MY ROLE

Lead Product Designer

I led the design of the user experience of the original in-house solution. I worked alongside a team of full-stack developers and a product manager to evaluate Esri ArcGIS's tool suite.

Our goals

• To research and evaluate the tools available from ArcGIS

• To look for new ways to meet and exceed our partner's expectations in their data collection projects

• To develop a proof-of-concept complete project workflow using Esri tools for Cadasta's partners

• To provide interactive pieces for the partners to sample a true project experience

Our process

• Created a fictitious partner, Project Rose, with a real-world problem to solve

• Developed a survey that originated as an XLS form and used Survey123 Connect to transform it into a questionnaire that could be used in the field by both the Collector and Survey123 field apps

• Created web maps for project managers to view data collection progress through a map interface

• Designed a web application to allow team members to add, edit, or delete records through a desktop user interface

• Devised dashboards to view data trends through graphs based on project metrics, access to resources, QA verification, and resource attachments

• Developed a project website for team members to efficiently locate all their project resources, training materials, and help documents

The results

After much trial and error, I introduced a complete project workflow using Esri tools as a successful proof-of-concept for Cadasta's partners. Project Rose serves as an interactive demonstration used in the onboarding partners.
