City of Straelen – Signage

Waygrowing System.
Moving Pallalelograms.

Straelen is a municipality in the district of Cleves, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located near the border with the Netherlands, approx. 10 km north-east of Venlo. The city initiated a wayfinding project that would lead visitors to the market center of the city. This approach focused on the natural growth of the cities architecture and their inhabitants. Straelen is an agricultural municipality, there are no major building districts or blocks of flats. The people build houses themselves and families move next to each other – a natural growth of a city. Therefore, the visual shape of the city itself serves as the reproducing element of the information carriers. To communicate the idea of agricultural growth, it was accurate to take the shape of the city and let it reproduce itself. Straelen looks like a parallelogram from a top view. Like a growing flower, several paralellograms can be stacked on top of each other to form the information carriers. The steles literally grow up from the ground and adapt themselves to the surroundings of the city. Like a stack of fauna the Signage entwines through the city, leading visitors to the core.
