Design as Observation

For my first collage I wanted to choose something that I use everyday. When I looked at my skateboard I thought I could get creative with it and find different angles of the trucks, wheels, and bolts to use. I started out by making small rough drafts in my sketchbook. I then compiled my favorite parts of each collage into one. Next I took my pictures and brought them into Photoshop and edited them like I planned. I am very satisfied with how this came out. I would like to do this with another board but capture it at different stages, when it's brand new, has medium ware, and when it's broken. Doing this with 3 different boards would help show that each skateboard has a different story and the wear/damage on each one depends on the types of tricks the rider enjoys doing.

After completing my first collage I started looking for an object for my second collage. I thought about telling a story and different items that could show their use. It didn't come to me until I was leaving my dorm to get dinner. I was putting on my sneakers and glanced over at my skate shoes. I saw the tears, globs of shoe glue, and wear on the sole and knew I had to make a collage with the shoe. After dinner I made small rough drafts in my sketchbook and compiled my favorite parts of each collage into one. Then I took my pictures and brought them into Photoshop and edited them like I planned. I am fairly satisfied with how this collage turned out. Like the skateboard I’d like to do this with 3 different pairs of shoes 3 times.

For my final collage I wanted to do something different. I decided to tell a story about the amount of time I spent on my computer working on this project. I thought it’d be cool to sit in different positions around my room and place my computer in different spots. To meet the 6 image requirements I placed the top of my computer on the monitor and the keyboard on my cork board. It was a challenge to keep each shot in the same frame. I had to do a lot of work with shadows and masks to stitch each image together. I am content with how this piece came out. I would change the monitor and cork board because I feel that they don’t fit the piece entirely. I would like to go back and fix that eventually.
