"The Colins" put together a hype reel for the Microsoft Edge Mobile browser to showcase a new set of differentiating features to promote the product on the Google playstore as well as to other design groups and leadership teams at Microsoft. If someone asked “what is Edge Mobile” the Microsoft Mobile Experience team wanted to have something to show to get the whole picture of what the product is and whats being built

- Make Edge Cool

-Create a Hype reel that could be reused for the whole year as features and proprieties change

-Flex 3d muscles

-Build a system that could be scaled, when new features are added we can add and remove sections appropriately

-Increase the visual polish vs older reels

The timeline was pretty long but during this period but I was still shipping other features and doing daily tasks. One thing to note is how long we stayed in a R&D mindset to make sure we were optimizing the overall flow, delivering the best output for the 3d design, and making sure the UI and features represented exactly what all the stakeholders were interested in showcasing

After we kicked out the first style frames we determined that the brand colors overpowered the scene and the bold edge colors really made the scene feel dated. We found a series of images which we felt better reflected the mood we were trying to captures and used adobe color to give us a new palate for us to work in

I was using RGB Spectrum nodes so I could that could drive the overall color of the entire blend material. There was lots of iterations during this time so most materials had several "color orphans" as we revised the look of the scenes

We wanted a level of detail, randomness, and seamlessness that made the materials feel tactile but minimal. To achieve this we used Octane UBER shaders and mix materials with 8k images we built in Photoshop or purchased.
