Design as Observation

For this project, I decided to focus on a collection of objects from my desk drawer. All of these objects were school supplies. I decided to shoot a variety of school supplies for my collection because each object had their own unique individuality regarding their size, texture and color. These are also all objects that I use on a daily basis. Even though all of the objects were from one common collection, I liked how they were a variety of different things.
When shooting images for my collection, I primarily focused on the positioning of the camera and the point of view I was shooting from. For every object, I took a very close up shot. These shots revealed the unique texture of each object and at times made the object difficult to identify. For the second shot of each object I decided to shoot it farther away and from an “ant-eye” view. The final shot of each object was taken from above, revealing a “birds-eye” view. This final shot made the objects of the collection easy to identify.
By capturing different angles and point of views of each object I felt as if the different textures and colors of each object was highlighted. Although each object was very different in appearance, they all made up the one common collection of school supplies.
