Origin of Modern Printing is an infographic design project for a visual class. This project was tasked to pick any topic which occurred before 1985 and integrated related historical materials. Since history education in eastern and western countries emphasized on different perspectives, it introduces and compares between printing history in two areas. This infographic was designed for a long tiled screen in James B. Hunt Library on NC State's Centennial Campus. The screen is about 21.3 feet by 7 feet which is made of about 16 by 7 of the squares.

  

 

  

  

In order to compare printing history between eastern and western countries, historical materials were collected and arranged in tables and descriptions. The infographic was based on a world map that shows important cities and the diffusion of printing technics. For each part, a main image presents how printing worked in the area. It also shows printing flow in pictures and instructions.

  

  

  

  

The color scheme in the infographic represents materials used in printing. It connects between area on the map. Besides, colors of each location also correspond to development timeline with printing products.

This infographic provides diverse ways of reading. For readers who have no prior knowledge in printing history, they can read the infographic from the introduction to gain fundamental ideas. It is also beneficial for those who know printing histories of a specific area. These readers can start from the area they were not familiar with. Last but not least, the infographic helps people compare between the information of printing, including time, materials, printing sequences and products. Though it shows geography and history information in different parts, lines and colors used can connect the information for readers.
