Military Fortress of Capo d’Orso

Periurban areas of Palau on the crossroads of history and nature create an atmosphere of development and growth and have a great potential to become an attractive and powerful place by providing functional diversity and meeting the needs of existing and potential users of the territory.
Connections between historical features and specific environmental conditions became the starting point for the design of a multifunctional memorial, scientific, recreational and touristic space on the island of Sardinia.

VALUES AND PRINCIPLES
In order to create a coherent and consistent environment, values of the space were identified. Such items as historical heritage, pure nature, functionality, accessibility, openness, diversity, and comfort are the focal points that became a basis for the project design. To embody the determined values, project includes a list of principles, such as respect the heritage; preserve the existing; not to destroy, but to enhance; plunge into nature, make it accessible; to design inclusive spaces; provide the new functions and its interconnections accounting needs of potential users; create a network of objects and places.

GENERAL IDEA
Firstly, the key points of the territory were determined, further functional and physical connections were installed. The concept is to create a network of the strategic objects of the fortress, which are self-sufficient in its functions but provide wider opportunities together. Several scenarios how different users can track through the territory were analyzed for the most effective use of the designed complex. The main itinerary is a link between the main objects, and an alternative path creates additional connections that expand and open more territories for users. Thus, not only the exact place become the Military Museum, but the whole territory as such.

MUSEUM
According to the general idea, the core element of the site was chosen for the central function of the projected complex. To dive into historical context, Museum is located mainly in the underground rooms to provide the feeling of the authentic atmosphere. Along with the rooms, there is an open exhibition place reserved on the upper open terraces which is flexible and can accommodate various types of events. To feel the place as it was used when the fortress served its primary function, this area is kept mostly in existing conditions and only a few transformations are implemented.

EVENT ZONE
On the upper terrace, an event pavilion is located. The glass walls separate event zone from the museum spaces if the conference is held. In other case, structure can transform into a platform for open-air lectures and concerts. The aim is to create the event zone as an expansion of the museum area by the inclusion of new functions.

MEMORIAL
Memorial Square is located on a distance from the event zone in order to preserve a silent place where people could be left alone with their thoughts surrounded by the history and inspirational natural environment.

RESTAURANT
To provide visitors with an unforgettable experience, the restaurant aims to be a place of rest and calmness. Thus its main structure is attached to the rock on the outer side of the complex and is open to the main panoramic view. Serving rooms are located in the existing buildings on the upper terrace and can provide banquet function during conferences.

RECREATION AND LEISURE
The whole territory of the complex has a wide network of pedestrian paths, is permeable and open to visitors. We expand the hiking links by offering an alternative way of walking along the hill, where on the most significant viewpoints are located the open terraces. And as the culmination point of the recreation path, there is a restaurant at the end of the way.

CONNECTIONS
To preserve the existing landscape, the territory is kept fully pedestrian and inclusive. Just for the additional comfort, the paths are wide enough to access the hotel by resort cars. Parking is located at the entrance to the territory.
