IED for Malta / Signs and Posters / Luzzu

IEDforMalta is a creative project born from the partnership between MTA (Malta Tourism Authority)
and IED (Istituto Europeo di Design).

The project, in which I participated, was aimed at some of the best IED students and alumni to leave for Malta
(in occasion of award the title of Valletta European Capital of Culture 2018) for collect symbols that inspired the creation of posters and thematic textures.

This is one of the posters I created for the project and showing a Luzzu.

Luzzu is the traditional fishing boat from the Maltese islands, brightly painted in shades of yellow, red, green and blue, and the bow is normally pointed with a pair of eyes.

These eyes may be the modern survival of an ancient Phoenician custom.
They are referred to as the Eye of Horus or of Osiris.

They are said to protect the fishermen while at sea.
