Ostensibly a documentary but actually an enigmatic blend of fact and fantasy, Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese centers on Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, his ramshackle but visionary 1975-76 tour.
In the film, Scorsese draws on archival footage from the Rolling Thunder Revue, including potential scenes shot for the 1978 art film Renaldo and Clara. Adding to the mix are present-day interviews, some with entirely invented characters. The actor Sharon Stone does appear as herself, but ends up telling a pair of tall tales about meeting Dylan on the tour.
Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story has earned plaudits from many critics, including Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, who describes the film as “mesmerizing.” For Scorsese, the project marks the third time he has captured Dylan on film, the first coming in the 1978 concert movie The Last Waltz and the second in the 2005 documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan.
