Nam Hwa Opera was founded by a group Teochew opera enthusiasts in 1963. Since its inception, Nam Hwa Opera is driven by their wish to preserve, promote and develop Teochew opera in Singapore. Because of that desire and drive, it has flourished into one of Singapore’s foremost Teochew Opera companies today.

At its 55th anniversary, Nam Hwa Opera looks to the future and makes concerted push to reinvigorate and innovate Teochew opera as a relevant and forward-looking artistic discipline. The decision to renew its visual identity was part of that same impetus.
Our team conceived the new identity based on the concept of looking at a heritage afresh through a new lens. To capture the elegance and sophistication of the art form, the Chinese typography in the logo design is drawn to be reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy with particular emphasis on bringing out dramatic lines and strokes drawn that emulate the musical and dramatic structure used in Teochew opera. A closer inspection of the 南, or nan, character will also subtly call to mind the painted face of 旦, or dan, character in Teochew opera.

To further create a sense of rhythmic movement and energy, the overall visual identity is made complete with the secondary graphics, derived from radial waveforms that visual represents the singing and music that emanates from the stage to the audiences.
