In Between
From the vision of 4 designers In Between was born, a unique and authentic crockery and cutlery collection made from brass and black obsidian, for which new technologies and traditional hand crafted techniques have been applied. In Between is an invitation to gather around the table and share. Not only to share flavors, smells and colors but also the transcendental meaning that is to share a meal with our loved ones. Something we have forgotten with time, like listening and be heard, like strengthening the bond of human relationships, like caring for others or simply being able to express and share our daily emotions and feelings.

Crockery and cutlery are basic elements for a dining table, both for every day and special occasions. We are providing these basic tools that we use for “eating” aesthetic qualities that will evoke feelings and memories to each individual involved in the ritual of dining and sharing together through tactility and unusual shapes. In Between is formed by 12 different elements. Each piece has been designed by considering established standard sizes.

We have given each object a name, each name represents important members of the family and close friends of the designers. The dialogue that came from combining the two materials (brass and obsidian) and the standard shapes for each piece of crockery and cutlery, allowed to unify the collection in color, style, elegance and depth. Both the brass and obsidian pieces have been finished with a mirror quality polish technique; the obsidian has traditional hand carving details making each piece unique thus providing the handmade quality.

Taller de Obsidiana has almost 40 years of experience providing the best lapidary finishing’s and manufacturingin the whole of Mexico. In these years, they have been able to optimize and innovate in the making process, they have adapted traditional lathes and created their own saws and polishing equipment.

María Mariscal is a jewelry and metalsmith brand with almost a decade running. They are particularly well known for the mixture of processes they work with. They mix new technologies such as laser cutting, industrial processes such as lathing, and hand crafted techniques such as hand sawing polishing, in order to provide the highest quality and detail in each piece.

As designer makers, both brands are concerned about the environmental and social impact they generate. They reuse and upcycle most of their residue and choose processes that generate the least environmental impact in the making. For this particular project, they have collaborated with local craftsmen and producers, therefore, benefiting the local economy of: Mexico City, Teotihuacán, and Ecatepec de Morelos.
