Barry Lyndon Color Graded for Netflix

This is a color grading study on the most beautiful movie ever shot, reimagining it as a Netflix Original period series. The picture has a very natural look, so I went for enhanced mood and drama. References are "The Crown" and "The Last Kingdom".

This contains SPOILERS.
I open the reel with the battle scenes, back in Barry's youth, when his life was full of optimism and an open-ended future. The days are sunnier and a beam of light shines over him wherever he goes.

(LEFT is ungraded, RIGHT is graded.)
Light still guides his path, but captain Grogan is being buried in the shadow as he dies. This is a turning point for Barry, for he really starts to live his own journey without his friends or family support.
Interior scenes are cold like his soul. But really, his bluff got caught and he has to keep working for the army against his will. He tries a very elegant, respectful life, so naturally we have a muted tone overall.
Things start getting better when he founds his own family - in a way. Earthy tones start to dominate; light is warmer; he is fixed, finally.
Of course I would dare grade a candlelight scene. Minor fixes, of course: vignette, white balance, touch of blue in the shadows mixed with orange to keep the blacks. This way the palette looks a little less monochromatic.
This color contrast was inspired by the paintings of Queen Victoria by Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Not really sure Kubrick would approve it, but I would definitely show him as a possible look.
In the final duel, I enhance the beam of light over his stepson, who steals his light (and his will to live) away from him. The fortune goes back to lady Lyndon, after being abused by Barry for decades.
