MONTESINOS Brand Identity

Montesinos is a small portuguese publisher focused simultaneously on high-end illustrated books and small print indie publishing. Managed and owned by the reputed critic and curator Pedro Moura, Montesinos publishes graphic novels by emerging and established artists, theoretical works concerning illustration and comics, and organizes conferences and exhibitions on the same topics.

The name Montesinos was extracted from a character of Cervante's famous novel D. Quixote, which lives in a cave bearing his name, where Sancho Pança (D. Quixote's loyal companion) believes lies a fortune in gold. After learning this, we (Cláudia Dias and myself) immediately knew where we had to go with this brand identity.

Here are some images of our presentation.
There was one major requirement from the management at Montesinos: we had to work with Garamond. It was (and still is) their favorite typeface, and we had to take it from there. So, taking into account that Montesinos focus on illustration, we developed a hand-rendered version of Garamond, with several tweakings and ligatures to set the logo in.
