Essence of Japan

Living with Nature in Japan
On my recent trip to Japan, I was captivated by its homogenity of the country.Tokyo has been known to be a popular metropolitan city full of tall buildings and congested with humans.

This surrealist poster seeks to depict the busy life at Shinjuku, that is famous for its bustling streets and vibrant nightlife.Chrysanthemum (Kiku) represents longevity, rejuvenation and nobility. Adored by the Japanese, it is also the imperial seal of Japan. It is even found on the passport of Japan itself as well as on their government and official documents.

This poster portrays the essence of Japan, focusing on the use of patterns inspired by the chrysanthemums commonly seen in their landscape. Japan is known as the Land of the Rising sun, and the flower represents the Sun itself as seen in the emblem. It is to show that emblem/patterns can be found even in the busy street of Japan.

The surrealism theme in this poster also further emphasizes the presence of the Chrysanthemum that is so deeply embedded in the life of Japan. The irrational composition of the poster depicts another perspective to see Japan through the eyes of us foreigners.
