Fight Club Website Concept

Design

This is an educational project made on the course “Grids and Website Design” at Bang Bang Education school. The final task of the course was to create a one-page website for a film. The page structure consists of trailer, synopsis, a list of the main actors and crew members, awards and a gallery of photographs.

Fight Club is one of my favorite films, so for me it was an obvious choice. I wanted to convey the mood and atmosphere of the film as well as to interest people who haven't watched it yet. It was also important for me to justify every design decision. Thus, each element has made sense and appeared for a reason.

Typography

Before starting work, I watched the film again and found out what fonts are used there. The action of the film happens during the 90s. Newspapers, magazines, announcements often appear in the frame. And along with the selection of fonts, I wanted to make a sense of tactility and the physical nature of the information.

There is't a lot of content on the website, so it was important to represent it as expressively as possible. I came up with idea to add fighting club rules. They break into the content, resist it, interrupt and break it into pieces, just like Tyler Durden. Rules create their own rhythm and form the framework of the page. Their character is emphasized by the confident, fit and dynamic Suisse Int'l Condensed. The main content behaves quite the opposite: calmly and strictly. It is typed with the most popular office font of that time – Courier.

Grid

A simple grid was made for the website, it is even a little boring to emphasize the character of the protagonist. The main content is structured according to the grid, but the fight club rules do not obey this system and locate any way they see fit.

Textures

The main character often uses copier at work. One of these copies features is spots which appear in places where the paper was jammed or not tightly adjoined. These highlights served as the basis for the textures on the site. The dust, dirt and film grain were added. Thus, I tried to make the site look analog. All the textures I made on a home scanner.

Adaptives

Of course, we shouldn't forget about mobile devices today.

Conclusion

Fight Club is one of my favorite films. I was lucky that there was an occasion to do something for it. I learned a lot during this project.
