My favorite thing to do is find illustrations from artists I admire and reach out to them and see if they'd be interested in collaborating on an illustration. Coincidentally Mark Conlan was looking for a 3D artist who could turn his designs into 3D. I obviously jumped to this opportunity and said yes right away!
We bounced ideas back and forth a few times. Our goal was to make a simple composition based on his drawings. Lighting was key.
In the process of 3 months I made several iterations and we locked down on a few compositions. I like that it gives a cozy, dreamlike feeling and there is something surreal about it.
