A Partnership with Nature: My Thesis Project

A Partnership with Nature
Thesis Semester

My project utilizes natural processes as a tool in the design methodology.  My first item is a lumineer that engages the growth of sugar crystals to manipulate the quality of light created from a fluorescent lamp. My second item is a set of tactile flatware.  What elevates this set above any other is that the foam positive for the mold has been sculpted by a mouse.  In order to best prove my thesis, I utilized two opposing processes to achieve the same goal.  The first, crystal growth, is an additive process, the second, mouse consumption, is a subtractive process.  This unorthodox, sustainable approach to design proved to be successful.
Crystallum is an accent light that emits both an ambient and direct light.  The frame was rotated in the sugar solution in a way that allowed for a denser growth on top, and a lower level of enclosure on the bottom.  The dense growth filters light to create a comforting ambient glow.  The open bottom allows for a more powerful radiance that creates a beautiful and dramatic pattern of light and shadow.
