The Big Sleep (Penguin book cover)

When first starting this live brief issued by penguin. I first read the book 'The big sleep' to gather a greater understanding of the story line with in the book to find out important scenes to visualise the surroundings and atmosphere that happen around the main character with in the book.
With ideas in mind i first thought about drawing the detective within the story because he is the main character. When first thinking of a detective this is what i first pictured and illustrated it.
With the illustration complete of the detective i decided to try and add type next the illustration to see if typeography would work with the natural lines with in the image.
With the illustration complete of the detective i decided to experiment with placeing it with in the constraints of the penguin book template provided by penguin.
Through experimentation with in the constraints of the penguin book template, i ended up forming this as a final design. I came up with this design through visualising a scene within the story between the 2 detectives with in the book 1 being good and the other shady. Where the shady detective blows smoke into the others face stating a quote, which is stated on the cigarette. Then after finishing the visualls with in the book cover i used the natural lines within the imagery to place the typeography such as the title, sub title and blurb.
After finishing the design i wanted to see what it would look like visually on a book cover so i bought a book and changed the cover with my own to gather if the imagery worked as a whole with the typeography.
