Afternoon Street Life in Chinatown

In this film, I have implied the technique of a series of fragments that build a whole. The reason I chose this method to represent the city is that I think cities are build up from different parts, and they put up together to form a city. For example, cities have an industrial area where the industries produce products, there is also some suburb area where it is a contrast to the central city, less people are living here and are quieter. City have central/business area where most people work there, these areas are usually very crowded, and the community is very thriving, and there are many shopping areas around the city. Therefore, I used the technique of a series of fragments that build a whole is to show all the different area of the city and merge it together to form a vision of the city. In my film, I have borrowed some techniques that Dziga Vertov used in his film ‘Man with a Moving Camera’ in 1929. In his film, he captured many Ukraine and Russia cities’ life by framing everyday life on the street of the city. For example, he framed passengers in a car, traffic controller controlling the traffic, tram passing through the railway, pedestrian walking on the street, etc. All these frames are framed separately and pieced it together in a film to form an overall view of the cities that he wanted to show to the audience. In my film, the theme is ‘Street Life in Chinatown.’ So, I have taken many fragments of the Chinatown area and merge it together to complete the overall view of Chinatown. My frames focused on the everyday life of the street, like pedestrian and the vehicles interacting with each other, police interrogating suspicious people on the street, people walking on the street and performers performing amazing skills on the street, tram passing through the railway, etc. These are the event that you can see on the street every day. And the technique that I have used are very similar to Dziga Vertov. I have also used old film effect and vintage music from the 1950s to create a classic and retro feel of the film to make it like an old documentary as this is the style of Vertov’s film. Also, I have implied different angle of frames like low angle framing on a tram and zoomed-in framing on people which Vertov also have used these similar methods of framing.
