Environmental Graphic Design
Critical and objectionable methods and tools for analysis and design

Being clear about what you are doing is a fundamental aspect
to design better.
To make aware choices, and above all respect the environment, you must first break and assess what has been done, a task that is often overlooked. The pr posed methodology is applied to a discipline called Environmental Graphic Design (EGD). Its origins date back to the beginning of ‘900 from the collaboration between graphic design, architecture, eco-design and landscape architecture. EGD works primarily for: steer people (wayfinding), give a sense of place (interpretation) and build identity (placemaking).
The largest context of application is the city, where places are divided by the type of access: open, limited and restricted.
For a designer is relevant to know
how a person perceives the surrounding space.
The elements that realize each project EGD are: typography, colour, texture/pattern, lights, shapes, materials and sizes. In addition to these: personal emotions and consistency of the final project.
The legend created in this thesis allows to decompose and evaluate in terms of graphical quality, each element of a project, chosen as a “case study”. This method of criticism, even if objectionable, can be very useful to understand the merits/flaws of graphic impact and give a greater awareness in the redesign.
Those who have more experience in the field of graphics will have less difficulty in assessing it, but whoever comes to this field for the first time will find information concerning the elements to be evaluated with case studies that have been already evaluated.
To make the reader more familiar towards the methodology, there are three case studies of Turin: the head office of the Polytechnic, Mao and the Metro, considered as a whole.
