since september, i have been walking in the forest, in particular, in the moscow botanical garden of academy of sciences and losiny ostrov national park. during my promenades in the forest i started to put down everything important that is connected to trees and their life.
i started to notice different conditions of trees and that is how i came up with the photofixation principle that captures the life of trees. it was important to show how the life of trees can be different: e.g. a tree stops growing and gets covered by moss going under the ground; a tree is no longer than a small wood chip or it just continues growing and its leaves are falling in autumn.
in order to show the life of trees its form is cut out from the environment it’s situated in. on the one hand, the tree condition is emphasized here, on the other hand, the silhouette of a tree becomes something abstract and starts a new life. this different point of view allows me to turn upside down the previous form, as the original orientation is no longer important.
my desire to find this contact with a tree as a result of which i separate it from the background becomes for me an act of the first communication and compassion to them.
