Wind In The Willows - Puffin book competition

This was a brief we were set, which was also a competition set by Puffin, to re-design the front cover of the book "The Wind In the Willows". Having read the book countless times as a child, and acting in various scenes from the book in speech and drama, I was very excited to do this project. When i re-read the book for this project the thing that stuck out to me most was Kenneth Grahame's detail about the weather, and the seasons. I wanted to create a cover that captured this, but also was light and fun for a younger audience. While I was sketching initial ideas, i drew a willow tree, and found that it had a similar structure to a toad's face, and I drew it over and over again to see if I could stick with that idea. I wanted the colour scheme to be spring  colours, but with smaller splashes of other colours in there. Each bit of detail on the image (and including the word 'willow') was cut out from paper that I had created textures on or painted onto. The writing "the wind in the' and "spend a season..." i hand drew. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and I hope people will like the illusion of the toads face and the willow tree.
