Medical Imaging Device Design for Mediso – MA degree

My MA degree project is about medical imaging. I designed the concept of the new generation of the AnyScan product family for a hungarian company, Mediso. Their product identity hasn’t changed since 2005 so the question is actual. In real life, the machine still need more development, so my concept is only a stage of the unfinished product. The Purpose of the new design is to calm the patient, and to give a comfortable and user centric device to the radiologists.
During the semester, I design three modality of the modular product family (CT, PET/CT, SPECT/CT). This is their most complex device, so it’s appropriate to demonstrate the new design. The technical content is nearly the same, but the architecture (new SPECT gantry) of the new machine is different. The tablet as user interface and the environment friendly boicomposite (NFRP) enclosure is novelty. I tried to find a shape that continues the already great design of the current machine, but shows a new path. I also changed the color plan of the device.

Research
I started the design process with research about Mediso Kft. and the products of the leader brands such as Philips, Siemens and GE. I could conclude how the manufacturers use thier design strategy. I distinguish two main strategies, based on the effect of the product: The design wich mainly works on the visceral level and the design wich works on the reflective level of the perception (this theory based on Don Norman's works).
Mediso AnyScan
AnyScan is a modular product family, what consits ofCT, PET and SPECT scanners. Each scanner could be ordered alone, or in different combinations. The currently manufactured machine has been designed by Bendzsel Tamás, he works on the product of Mediso since 2005. The AnyScan family was developed in 2007 and 2008. The new, three detector SPECT has been made in 2015. During my degree project, I designed three combination of the modules: CT, PET/CT, SPECT/CT.
Shape types
I distinguish four types of CT scanner machines by shape: Barrel, block, mixed simple and mixed fragmented. These types not only separeted by different shapes, but also by their behavior and connection with space and people.
Shape studies
After the research, I search the shape of the modalities trough sketches and models. The most characteristic parts of the machine are the SPECT detectors. I attached tablets to the gantry as contollers, that's it has a shoulder like shape. The tablets could be easily mounted with magnets.
