Around the Pagoda there are special places for every day in the week. Buddhists are looking for the day they were born at (e.g. the "Saturday" temple) and praying there for luck.
On the weekday-place Aung San Suu Kyi is praying when she is coming to Shwedagon, there is a tv-camera installed to record the whole visit, so everybody can watch this happening.

Never seen in any country before: the burmese-style "call-box". Every 50m there is a little table with 1-3 telephones for local calls. Although mobiles are cheaper nowadays, this way of calling is still used often.
