Urban Regeneration Of An Old Commercial Area: Khatungonj, Chittagong

Description: The aim of this project is to improve business facilities and present infrastructural condition of Khatungonj Commercial Area, while saving the beautiful architectural heritage conveying the timeline of several architectural styles in Bangladesh since British Colonial Period. The area consists of several buildings aged more than 200 years as well. In a whole, the area should be brought under conservation as a marker of architectural heritage in Bangladesh.

Khatungonj Commercial Area is one of the major wholesale market of dry foods and spices of Bangladesh. Traditionally it used Chaktai Canal as it's main transport route of goods from inside and outside of Bangladesh. Presently the appeal is mostly lost and the Canal has become a dump from man-made pollution and illegal abductions. Extensive traffic pressure in the narrow main road hampers trading in Khatungonj.

The project intends to provide a solution to revive and restore Chaktai Canal through trading and recreational facilities with a vision to improve and re-activate and reconnect waterways, Thus reducing pressure on street traffic.

Proposed Mixed-use module with wholesale market at ground floor, warehouse in the basement and residence and small or shared office spaces at upper floors.

An attempt to recreate the elevation of Khatungonj Commercial Area having intricately detailed doors and windows referencing the adapted British Colonial Architectural Style by local artisans back then.
